1-2-3 The “Deep Work Shield” That Blocks Interruptions for Good

sent by Joaquín Kosegarten | August 21, 2025

Every second counts, so let’s get right to it. 1 idea, 2 ways it saves you time, and 3 steps to Get It Done:

1 Idea

Use a clear signal to let people know when you’re in deep focus mode.

2 Ways it saves you time

 1. Prevents Interruptions – Each interruption forces your brain toreset, wasting 23 minutes on average to regain full focus.

 2. Safeguards ow – Deep focus leads to ow (a state of e ortless focus and peak performance), which allows for up to 5x productivity than in a normal state. 2hrs in ow > normal full work day.

3 Steps to Get It Done:

 1. Pick a clear signal – Use noise-canceling headphones, a “Do Not Disturb” sign, or even a desk light to show you’re in focus mode.

2. Train your environment – Let coworkers, family, or roommates know that when they see your signal, it means no interruptions unless it’s urgent.

 3. Use a “focus window” – Set a fixed time block (e.g., 90 minutes) where you’re unreachable.

Conclusion

Deep work isn’t just about focusing — it’s about staying focused. Set your shield and protect your best thinking time.

But what if I need to be available for people?”

Simple — schedule open-door time. Let people know when you’re available so they can save non-urgent questions for later.

As promised — 1 minute that can save you hours

P.S. I told my coworkers I’d only respond to urgent messages during deep work. Now every message starts with “Super urgent!!!” followed by “What’s the WiFi password?”
