1-2-3: The Breakfast Mistake That Makes You Mentally Foggy by 10am

sent by Joaquín Kosegarten | August 25, 2026

You eat breakfast, get to your desk feeling fine, and somehow by 10am your brain is sluggish, your focus is slipping, and you are reaching for another coffee.

The culprit is probably not your sleep or your stress.

It’s what you put on your plate two hours earlier.

1 Idea

Make protein, not sugar or refined carbs, the centrepiece of your breakfast.

2 Ways it saves you time

1. Sugary or carb-heavy breakfasts spike your blood glucose fast, then crash it just as fast. That crash hits right around the 10am mark, which is exactly when you should be doing your sharpest work. The result is 30 to 45 minutes of foggy, slow-thinking output during your peak window. A protein-led breakfast keeps glucose steady, which means your morning peak actually performs like a peak.

2. The crash also triggers cravings for more sugar or caffeine to recover, which leads to more spikes, more crashes, and a wasted morning of energy management instead of actual work. Most people spend 20 to 30 minutes a day chasing the energy their breakfast quietly stole. A protein-based breakfast removes the cycle entirely. You wake up sharp and stay sharp until lunch, no rescue mission required.

3 Steps to Get It Done:

1. Look at what you ate for breakfast this week. If it was mostly cereal, toast, pastries, fruit smoothies, or anything sugary, you have found the issue.

2. Tomorrow, make protein the anchor: eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, smoked salmon, or a protein-rich shake. Aim for 20 to 30 grams.

3. Add carbs and fruit if you want, but only after the protein. Your brain wants the slow burn, not the spike.

Conclusion

The morning fog that feels like a focus problem is usually a fuel problem.

Get the first meal right and the rest of your morning runs cleaner. Try this for three days and notice how different 10am feels.

This is what the Energy step in Get It Done is built around: the small inputs your body needs to turn ordinary mornings into your sharpest hours.

“But I don’t even feel hungry in the morning!”

You don’t need a big meal. You need the right one. A protein-rich shake, a couple of eggs, or even a small bowl of Greek yoghurt with nuts is enough. Skipping breakfast entirely also works for some people, but eating a sugar-heavy breakfast is the worst of both worlds: you eat, and you still crash. Pick steady fuel or pick none. The middle option is the one quietly stealing your mornings.

As promised — 1 minute that can save you hours

P.S. Fun Fact: Researchers at the University of Sydney built a tool called the Glycemic Index in the 1980s to measure how quickly different foods spike blood sugar. The most surprising finding was that some so-called “healthy” breakfast staples scored higher than table sugar. Cornflakes, for example, have a glycemic index of around 81, while standard white sugar (sucrose) sits at 65. That bowl of cereal you assumed was a balanced start to the day was, biochemically speaking, hitting your bloodstream faster than dessert. The marketing won. Your morning focus paid the bill.
